After sponsorship from Clear Financial Solutions Ltd and much fundraising, I have just returned from Uganda, Africa, with Littleover Community School sixth form.
Working with children and teachers from the Child Africa school in Kabale, our aim was to cre-ate firstly a vegetable garden to enable the school to grow their own produce, as well as build-ing a log storage hut for all the tools, seeds and crops and a guard. One thing we didn't initially anticipate was the size of the project, in which we had to walk up the side of a mountain each day to get to the acre of land we were working on.
By the end of 8 working days, we managed to turn over all the land and plant an area of cab-bages (pictured bottom left), as well as complete the storage hut with steel roofing (pictured middle right) and five large picnic benches for within the school. Each of our 20 students got paired with two children from the P5 class, aged between 10 and 13 years old. Pictured middle left is myself with my two children Savious (left) and Falook.
Over the first 4 days small groups of us went on home visits to meet families of children within the school; a very humbling and moving experience. One fami-ly that my group and I visited consisted of a single mother suffering with ma-laria, who's husband had been killed when the youngest boy Amos was only 1 month old. Living with her other 4 children, she had barely been able to feed the family over the previous few days and only 2 of them had enough sponsor-ship to attend the Child Africa school. We presented the family with food and gifts including scholastic materials. This meant that another child could go to school if sponsorship was to be given, which our group leader later told us he was going to donate each month for the youngest boy Amos. A week later we were able to see him on his first day in the school.
Having collected and taken with us over 20 football kits, 8 laptops, a microscope, several packs of exercise books and scholastic materials and piles of children's clothes, the whole school were overwhelmed with excitement and gratitude as we revealed it on our last day.
Thanks to Clear Financial Solutions Ltd contributing sponsorship to my visit, I, along with fel-low pupils have begun changing these children's lives for the better. As Littleover sixth form returns with new pupils in future years, the project will continue to grow.
